Oil industry and economic development, social areas of the northern Persian Gulf Case Study Kharg (1956-76/1335-55)

To explore the impact of the oil industry on the economic and social development of Kharg Island.
Method / Research Design: This study is based on library resources and archival documents.
Findings: With the selection of Kharg as the main terminal for export of the Iranian crude oil, numerous facilities were installed on the island. Kharg then became Iran's biggest oil export hub and one of the world's largest. As the result, topographic and demographic changes took place in the Island: living standards improved and the infrastructure of the Island hugely developed. As the result a new middle class emerged as a hundreds of staff and their families created a new community on the Island.
