Chromium and its role in glucose metabolism and nutrition of dairy cows

Abstract:
Chromium is an element that there is no report for its requirement in dairy cattle, but in two last decades is considered as a new research field in cattle nutrition and its roles innutrition and glucose metabolism in dairy cows were studied. This element is in sixth group in transition metals of periodic table and the form of is biologically active. The effects of chromium in the metabolism is mediated through insulin activity and by a compound named chromodulin. The results of researchs indicated that the use of this element in the diet of dairy cows results in positive effects in production, reproduction and metabolism especially in stress situations especially around parturition. Based on researches Chromium usually exerts its metabolic effects post absorption and it hasn’t any effect on the level of gastrointestinal tract.
