Effect of fiber length variations of different OCC pulp on strength properties of fluting papers

Abstract:
Background
High volume of recycled waste paper collection in the world, in addition to helping the environment, cause more economical paper production. Since the use of recycled pulps cause quality loss in paper products; therefore, the determination of the quality of OCC recycled pulp can better predict the produced fluting paper characteristics. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of fiber length variation and classification of OCC pulp fiber types produced from recycled paper on fluting paper quality.
Methods and materials: From the four types of recycled paper, OCC pulp was prepared and to achieve fiber dimensional distribution, NSSC pulp and recycled pulp samples fiber classification was done by Bauer McNett fiber classification system based on standardized test Tappi, T 233 cm - 82 laboratories in Mazandaran Wood and Paper industries mill. Finally, 127 grams handsheet, was prepared according to Tappi, T 205om-88 to measure structural (density) and strength properties (tear strength, burst strength, breaking length and corrugated medium test.
Results
The results have shown that, OCC pulp from recycled roll, has a minimum amount of long-fiber and maximum amount of fine and OCC pulp from municipal waste has the highest amount of long fibers. The density of handmade paper from OCC pulps from recycled roll, municipal waste, store waste, cartons side fell and control NSSC pulp, was respectively, 0.55, 0.55, 0.55, 0.54 and 0.54 g/cm3. Between a variety of recycled pulp, municipal waste OCC pulp, has more tensile strength (breaking length), burst strength and tear strength, that the reason, according to the fiber classification results, relating to uniform distribution and high percentage of long fibers. OCC pulp from recycled rolls due to higher fines and lower long fiber, has been the lowest resistance. Between a variety of recycled pulp, cartons side fell OCC pulp, is more resistant to fluting. Since the cartons side fell in fact the cartons are clean now, has a significant share of long fiber and more healthful than other recycled papers. OCC pulp from recycled rolls due to higher fines and lower long fiber, has been the least corrugated medium test.
Conclusion
OCC pulps produced from different paper sources have different classification and distribution of fiber dimensions that have a significant impact on the fluting paper qualitative characteristics. Therefore, the tests fiber scan be used to predict fluting paper properties. OCC pulps with high amounts of long fiber and low amounts of fines has some good strength properties (tensile strength, burst strength and tear strength) for producing fluting paper.
