Assessing Chemotherapy Affect on Osteoporosis in Comparative Study between 30-60 Years old Men with Cancer and Control Group

Objective
Osteoporosis is a Known Disease that more than 75 million people in Europe, Japan and North America suffering from it and in Europe and America along with over 2.3 million fractures per year. Prevention of osteoporosis and related fractures is the health basis, quality of life and independence of older people. Therefore, this study examined the relationship between chemotherapy and osteoporosis if there is any significant effect, measures to prevent these complications occurs.
Materials and Methods
In this case – control study, case group was selected among the 60-30 year old patients with cancer admitted to blood unit of Imam Reza Hospital and control group was selected among the patients were admitted to the internal medicine clinic. The bone density for 2 groups was measured using DEXA. Also the serum levels of CA, P, Alk. P were measured among both case and control groups.
Results
120 patients were enrolled in two groups of 60 persons contained case and control. Patient age ranged from 30 to 60 years. The average age of the people who participated in the study was 48.05 ± 7.99 years. This rate in the treatment group and the control group was 47.96 ± 8.20 years was 48.15 ± 7.84 years. The mean BMI was significantly lower in the case group then the control group (P-value = 0.008). The mean of serum blood calcium, phosphorus and alkaline phosphates no statistically significant difference between the two groups. Average wrist bone mineral density in case group was -2.85± 1.13 and -2.29 ± 1.29 in controls. Wrist bone mineral density was significantly lower in cases then controls (P-value = 0.007). The average amount of vertebral bone mineral density in patients was – 1.87 ± 1.27 and -1.37± 1.31 in controls. Spine bone mineral density was significantly lower in the case group then the control group (P-value = 0.039).
Conclusions
We believe that patients who receive chemotherapy for cancer are at increased risk of bone loss. These patients should be evaluated by measuring BMD regularly monitored to assess the effectiveness of preventive treatment. Taking special measures for early detection and prevention of chemotherapy – induced osteoporosis can significantly reduce the Morbidity and Morbidity in this field and improved the quality of life of patients who are undergoing chemotherapy.
