The effectiveness Jigsaw and traditional teaching methods on anxiety- attitudes and Math performance

Abstract:
Purpose
This study was carried out to compare the effectiveness of cooperative and traditional learning on the mathematics anxiety¡ attitudes towards mathematics and mathematics performance of the ninth grade high school students of Sardasht city by using a quasi-experimental study. The statistical population included 682 individuals that were all the ninth grade high school students. And 40 individuals were selected in two 20 individual groups by multistage cluster random sampling method.
Method
Math Anxiety Scale (Baloglu & Zelhart¡ 2007)¡ Mathematics Attitude Scale (Fennema-Sherman 2000)¡ and Teacher-Made tests of mathematics academic performance were used to collect data. And the Jigsaw cooperative learning model was used to monitor the effectiveness of the presence or absence of cooperative learning and data were analyzed by SPSS software and analysis of one-way covariance (ANOVA).
Findings: In this study three hypotheses were formulated that their results indicated that There is a significant difference between the Jigsaw cooperative and traditional learning models learning on the math anxiety¡ attitudes towards math and mathematics performance of the ninth grade high school students of Sardasht city and It is concluded that Jigsaw cooperative learning model can be used as one of the effective methods in schools to reduce mathematics anxiety¡ positive attitude towards mathematics and to enhance the ninth grade students’ mathematics performance.
