Effect of Spiritual Skills Training on Anxiety of Adolescent Girls under Methadone Treatment

Abstract:
Several studies have found the comorbidity of substance abuse and anxiety disorders, and these findings are associated with significant clinical implications. This study aimed to investigate the effect of spiritual skills training on anxiety in adolescents under methadone treatment. This study was a quasi-experimental evaluation with pretest-posttest control group design. Participants (N=30) were randomly assigned to control group (n=15) and intervention group (n=15). Intervention group received 10 sessions (two weekly sessions, and each session included two hours) of the group spiritual skills training. Social anxiety scale was measured at the beginning and the end of training. Data was analyzed using descriptive statistics (mean and standard deviation) and univariate analysis of covariance. The results showed that spiritual skills were significantly decreased in the intervention group at the end of training. The results suggest that spiritual skills training could be used along with medical treatment to reduce anxiety and increase mental health in adolescents under methadone treatment.
