Effect of combined training on body composition, lipids levels and indicators of metabolic syndrome in overweight and obesed postmenopausal women

Abstract:
Introduction
Metabolic syndrome is associated with over weight and obesity, and is also known as a risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD) and type II diabetes. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of 10 weeks of combined training on body composition, lipid profile and indicators of metabolic syndrome in overweight and obese postmenopausal women.
Method
Twenty four overweight and obese postmenopausal women with a mean age of 54.6±3.9 years were randomly divided into experimental (n=14) and control (n=10) groups. Subjects of experimental group were performed 10 weeks of training including aerobic exercise (2 sessions per week with 65-75% MHR) and resistance exercise (2 sessions per week with 55-65% 1RM). Weight, BMI, percent body fat, TG, TC, HDL-C, LDL-C, glucose, insulin, insulin resistance and blood pressure were measured at beginning and after training. Data were analyzed using analysis of covariance and umann - whitney tests.
Results
After training, no significant differences were found in body composition variables, TG, TC, HDL-C, LDL-C, glucose, insulin, insulin resistance and blood pressure between two groups.
Conclusion
The results showed that ten weeks of combined training with moderate intensity has no significant effect on body composition, lipids levels and indicators of metabolic syndrome in overweight and obese postmenopausal women. This may be due to inadequate intensity and duration of training for favorable changes in measured variables.
