Effectiveness of educating the mothers of the children with cleft lips and palates to use parenting skills based on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy(ACT) on their children"s self-esteem: A single subject design research
Abstract:
An Isolated case method research with individual intervention was conducted to examine the effectiveness of educating mothers of children with cleft lip and palate-to use Acceptance and Commitment Therapy(ACT) parenting skills-on their childrens self-esteem. The research was done in Isfahan province.
Parenting skills based on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) were taught to five mothers of children with cleft lip and palate who achieved the minimum score in screening. After three baseline sessions for each child, ACT parenting skills were taught to their mothers in eight individual sessions following with testing the childs self-esteem. Finally, childrens self-esteem were tested in Three follow up sessions with intervals of fifteen days, 1 month and 3 month.
We used Coopersmith Self-esteem Inventory Questionnaire(1967) for testing the childrens self-esteem. The results were analyzed with visual analysis and descriptive statistics.
Findings have shown that in every five subjects the intervention influenced self-esteem variables (for all subjects PND=100%).
Taken together with other corresponding theories and researches, it may be suggested that teaching ACT parenting skills to the mothers of children with cleft lip and palate can result in increasing the childrens self-esteem.
