Conclusion: To improve the quality of life after surgical removal of impacted mandible third molars dexamethasone injection can be used before surgery

Corticosteroids are one group of medications that are administered to reduce complications and improve the quality of life after surgery of impacted third molars. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of premedication with dexamethasone on quality of life after surgical removal of impacted mandibular third molars.
This cross-sectional study was carried out on 60 patients undergoing surgical removal of impacted mandibular third molar teeth. In 30 subjects (the case group), 8 mg of dexamethasone was administered half an hour before surgery. The second group was selected as the control group. Two standard questionnaires of OHIP-14 and HRQoL designed to assess of quality of life were distributed among the subjects in both groups after surgery and at 1-, 7- and 14-day postoperative intervals. The total scores of these two questionnaires were reported as patient’s quality of life score in each group and compared between the two groups. The results were analyzed with SPSS, using t-test at a significance level of p value The mean quality of life in the two groups was lower on the first day after surgery compared to the preoperative period (p value = 0. 001). It was higher one week after surgery compared to the one-day postoperative interval (p value = 0. 001); and two weeks after surgery it was higher than the preoperative period. In all the cases٫ the standard of quality of life was higher in the case group compared to the control group.
