The Effectiveness of Schema Therapy on Reducing Emotional Instability and Feeling of Abandonment among Patients with the Borderline Personality Disorder in Arak

Abstract:
Purpose
The present study aims at evaluating the effectiveness of schema therapy on the feeling of abandonment and emotional instability among people with the borderline personality disorder.
Method
The study was quasi-experimental with pretest-posttest control group. The population were all patients with the borderline personality disorder who have referred to psychiatric centers in Arak in 2015. A total of 24 people were randomly selected and assigned into two experimental and control groups (n = 12 for each group). To gather data, the Borderline Personality Disorder test was used. The data were analyzed through covariance analysis and paired sample t-test.
Findings: The analysis of the covariance results showed that schema therapy can significantly reduce the scores of emotional instability and the feeling of abandonment among patients with the borderline personality disorder. According to the data, based on the positive impact of schema therapy on reducing symptoms of patients with the borderline personality disorder, the method is recommended to be used in remedial settings.
