Relationship of Attitude to Globalization and Health in Students

Abstract:
This research aimed to investigate the relationship of attitude to globalization with two components of health, namely social health and the avoidance of drugs, narcotics, and alcohol. The research method was descriptive-correlation. The statistical population consisted of students who were studying at Shahid Chamran University of Ahvaz who were selected by the stratified method and completed questionnaires on attitudes toward globalization and health. Pearson correlation coefficient showed that there was a significant and positive relationship between attitude toward globalization and social health. There was a significant and negative relationship between attitudes toward globalization and the avoidance of drugs and alcohol usage. There were positive and significant relationships between social and economic attitudes toward globalization, use of industrial products, and social health. There was a negative and significant relationship between cultural attitude toward globalization and social health. There were negative and significant relationships between the political, economic and cultural attitude, the amount of use of communication technologies, industrial products, and cultural products, commercial advertisements with the variable of avoiding drugs and alcohol. The results of stepwise regression showed that the two variables of social attitude and cultural attitudes toward globalization explained 14% of the variance of social health. The variables of the amount of use of communication technologies, cultural attitude towards globalization and the amount of attention to commercial advertising explained 10% of the variance in avoiding drugs, narcotics, and alcohol. These findings point to the dual effects of globalization; meaning that, although globalization has improved social health, it leads to higher tendency to use drugs, narcotics and alcohol.
