Assessment and improvement of functional and social representing qualities of the entrance and exit gates of city in terms of tourism development (case study: Baneh city)

City gate is the first space that the passengers are faced with it on arrival to the city and also, it is a last space that the audience passes it and goes out the city when he wants to get out the city. So, the gate plays a significant role in the creation of subjective memory. In the spaces around the city gate, the natural features of the outside and surrounding spaces of the city and also, the characteristics of the built environment in the city are observable.The space of the city gate must meet various performance and environment quality due to the position that it has so that it to be used in different times and circumstances. In urban tourism, if city gate has favorable environment qualities and various functions, it will be always considered as a hub to attract population. In this study which is applied research and using mixed method, the indicators measuring the functional and social representing qualities are defined by analyzing the scientific content of case study and aforementioned representing qualities of the gates of Baneh City are assessed. In this assessment, z-test was used with the confidence interval of 95% and obtained results were analyzed. Then, to develop the tourism in the city gates of Baneh City, the strategies of improving the physical quality of public space, increasing the inviting feature of gate space, increasing the presence of people in the spaces of gate in different seasons and during a day, Maintaining and improving the safety and security, improving the quality of streets and access, creating mixed land use and compatibility between land-uses, calming the traffic along the routes to the city and increasing the economic efficiency were provided. And finally, special policies were defined for each of strategies to realize them.
