The Relationship between General Health and Quality of Work Life of Nurses Working in Zahedan Teaching Hospitals

Nurses as the largest professional group in the health care system, encounter numerous stressors in the workplace which can threaten their quality of work life and general health. The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between general health and quality of work life of nurses working in Zahedan teaching hospitals.
In this cross-sectional study, the research population was all nurses working in Zahedan teaching hospitals in 1395. 240 nurses were enrolled in a multi-stage sampling method based on the ratio of nurses in hospitals. Data collection tools were personal characteristics questionnaire, General Health Questionnaire-28 (GHQ-28) and Walton's Quality of Work Life (QWL). Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, independent t-test, ANOVA and Pearson correlation using SPSS.22 software.
The mean score of nurse's general health was 56.83 ± 11.69 and quality of work life of nurses was 114 ± 61.33. 48.7% reported undesirable general health. 29.3% of nurses had poor quality of work life and 42.1% of them reported average quality of work life. There was no significant correlation between quality of work life and general health of nurses.
Although the relationship between quality of work life and general health of nurses was not significant in this study, nearly half of them had poor general health and average quality of working life. It is essential that health managers and policymakers develop appropriate programs and strategies to continuously monitor the general health and quality of working life of nurses in order to promote them.
