The Hubs and Features of Inscription in Khorasan: Timurid and Safavid Eras

Abstract:
Purpose
To recognize hubs and manners of inscription during Timurid and Safavid eras in Khorasan which is the most important hub for inscription and transcription throughout different historical eras in Iran.Methodology
Desk and manuscript research. 45000 colophon (the scribe) of manuscripts being catalogued in Astan Quds Razavi library were searched, 44 of which have been written in Khorasan and during Timurid and Safavid eras. The selected manuscripts were analysed based on their inscription hubs and features.Results
Twenty-eight 28 (64%) manuscripts were related to scholars hubs, 10 (23%) to ministerial and 6 (13%) to binding hubs. In scholar hub, writing annotation (89%) and correction (92%) are seen; in ministerial hub, calligraphy (90%) and handwriting quality (supreme and excellent) (70%) and ornaments (80%); and in binding hub, calligraphy (67%) and handwriting quality (good) (67%) and misspelling (100%) are seen.Conclusion
Studying inscription characteristics of each hub helps in discovering goals and reasons for writing and the location of each manuscript. Keywords:
