Abstract:
Erwin Panofsky is a leading scholar of the twentieth century in the field of medieval studies. his Book: Abbot Suger on the Abbey Church of St Denis are one of his most important works on art, architecture, and Gothic philosophy. Panofsky's extensive research, carried out by Symbolism and Iconography, made significant advances in the study of images and opened up new horizons to art historians. Panofsky's approach was also criticized. One of the most important reviews about Panofsky's method is "Doxography" rather than "historiography", and there are some doubts about the impact of Suger on Gothic, in particular. Panofsky in his works, attempts to identify Suger as a Gothic architect and philosopher, or at least as the author and commentator of a set of philosophical thoughts of that era (the school of St. Victor, the School of Chartres and the Boethius legacy with the Augustinian-Dionysian thought), And creates a philosophical system for Suger. The second critique of Panofsky's interpretation is to eliminate the autonomy of the image; on the image that Panofsky is engaged in his iconography, there are usually masses of aesthetic and mythological texts attached, as if the image without them is understandable.
