The Effectiveness of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) on mental health and quality of life of the patients with type 2 diabetes

Abstract:
Introduction

The stress resulting from Diabetes will also have negative psychological effects like depression, anxiety, stress as well as physical damages. In other words, stress, depression and anxiety are among the risk factors or exacerbating factors of diabetes, which will lead to an increase in treatment costs and a reduction in mental health and quality of life in these patients.

Objectives

The present study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of mindfulness- based stress reduction (MBSR ) on improving the quality of life and mental health in patients with type 2 diabetes.

Methods

The present study is a quasi-experimental study with control group. Thirty six patients with diabetes referred to a private clinic in Bojnourd were included in the study with convenient sampling method and randomly divided into two groups of 18 patients . The experimental groups received an 8 session MBSR intervention. For assessing the quality of life, Sf36 questionnaires and Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI ) were administered in pretest, posttest and a 2- month follow up. The mixed variance analysis was used for the statistical analysis using SPSS.

Results

The findings indicated the effectiveness of MBSR intervention on improving the quality of life and mental health. The interaction effect between groups and the time of evaluation on mental health ( F=15.989, p<0.001) and quality of life (F=16.609, p<0.001) was statistically significant. the results also represented that these effects were stable or had a slight change in follow-up which reflects the lasting effects of the intervention.

Conclusions

MBSR intervention can improve the quality of life and mental health in patients with type 2 diabetes.
