The European Union, The Reason For Separatism

At first glance, the phenomenon of separatism nationalism in Western European democracies may seem unusual. While European countries have been taking decades to form a transnational state under the name of the European Union, and have left the body part of their sovereignty and independence, in many of these countries separatist movements have called for a break with their respective governments and have been taking on an increasing trend. This article seeks to clarify the correlation between convergence and separatist tendencies in Europe. Existing surveys show that the practical adoption of EU policies on minorities will strengthen ethnic and local identities in a way that will allow them to make decisions about their own fate. It opens up a window to escape the constrained frames of their respective governments, and in another way, by affecting the national sovereignty of the member states, it allows minorities to have more freedom.
