Abstract:
The Iranian local rice cultivars with wide premium grain and cooking quality are considered as a valuable source in establishing breeding populations. Less water requirement, high cooking quality, marketability and consumer preferences of local rice varieties are the important priorities for cultivation this type of cultivars in the northern region and other provinces of Iran. Therefore, new rice cultivars similar to the local rice varieties with lower water requirement, desirable growth and cooking quality as well as better performance and resistant to lodging are the major research priorities. In this study, the different breeding populations were developed using simple and back crossing methods on local and improved rice cultivars. During the years 2006 to 2010, purification process were conducted to access some dwarf and early lines with back grand of local rice cultivars. Selections from each population were performed using the pedigree method that led to the selection of 61 promising lines. Selected lines and three lines derived from back crosses were studied in terms of characteristics such as grain yield, plant height, earliness and quality traits such as amylose content in 2011 and 2012. From total of 64 lines, 8 promising rice lines and two rice cultivars (Hashemi ad Saleh) as checks were selected and examined in adaptability and stability trials using GGE biplot method during 2013-2014. From this trial, a back cross line between two varieties Saleh and Abjiboji was selected. The grain yield, 100-grain weight and filled grains number of this new line were 5.25 t/ha, 2.55 g and 127.5, respectively. This new rice cultivar was dwarf (107.5 cm) and early (112.5 day) and its cooking quality was similar to that of Iranian local rice varieties. This new rice cultivar was released in the name of Gilaneh to farmerʼs community in 2016
