Statistical Analysis of Sedimentology and Sedimentary Geochemistry Data of Aeolian Sediments in Khuzestan Province

The Khuzestan plain is located in south western of Iran and is covered about 3.9 percent of the country area. Khuzestan plain is mostly covered by the Quaternary deposits. The thickness of these deposits exceeds 300m in some areas .Sedimentology and geochemistry studies of sand dunes producing centers are important not only to determine sedimentology and geochemical features of the possible origin of the particles, but also important to determine the characteristics of the environmental elements in these particles and their role in environment and air pollution. In this study, based on standard methods of sampling for surface sediments study, 35 samples, for study of sedimentary and sedimentary geochemistry were taken from sand dunes from 5 areas in the Khuzestan plain. The samples were investigated by grain size and chemical analyses in laboratories of Geological Survey of Iran. The results indicate that the size of the deposits is classified in sand, muddy sand and minor amount of gravel. Statistical parameters of sedimentology and morphoscopic studies often indicate wind source which has been influenced by fluvial processes. Regarding the geochemistry of sedimentary studies, and according to factor and cluster analysis with SPSS software, the two main sources of elements in the Khuzestan plain aeolian sediments are: detrital (Cu, Li, Nb, Ni, Th, V, Zn, La, Pr); Chemical (evaporation) and anthropogenic pollutions (petroleum pollution) (Zr, Ba, U, Sr). The results of the Factor analysis were confirmed by results of the cluster analysis
