A Glance at the Political and Economic Changes in Kharg Island from Ancient Periods to Safavid Era

Kharg is one of the important and strategic islands of Iran. However, its significance is not merely limited to its place and influence in recent centuries. A study of the historical background of this island reveals that its geographical situation and natural conditions played some roles in people’s gravitating to it and its turning into a transit route for sea commerce. Moreover, one cannot ignore the active role and noteworthy share of this island in pearl hunting. Given the particular historical conditions of Kharg Island, this paper aims to examine the effects of this important and critical island on the political and economic changes in the Persian Gulf from ancient times to the Safavid period.
