Evaluation of the Relationship between the Attendance of a Companion Midwife and Maternal and Neonatal Consequences in 2013-2018
The quality of support that a mother receives during labor is important for maintaining the health of all family members. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the relationship between companion midwifery (DULLA) performance and maternal and neonatal outcomes. This research is a descriptive-analytical and case-control study of a prospective type that was conducted between 2013-2018. The study population consisted of mothers referred to the delivery ward of Saveh hospitals. Information on maternal and neonatal outcomes was collected according to inclusion and exclusion criteria. Data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Demographic characteristics were not significantly different between the two groups. There was significant difference in the type of delivery between the two groups, and in the case group, the highest rate of vaginal delivery was observed (p = 0.001). The duration of the active phase of the first and the second stages of labor was less in the case group(p = 0.001).The rate of postpartum hemorrhage between the two groups was significantly lower in the control group(p = 0.001). There was no significant difference between the two groups in terms of the beginning of breastfeeding in the first hour after birth (p = 0.08). Conclusion The presence of a companion midwife (DULLA) with the mother improves some of the outcomes childbirth. It is recommended that studies be done in the field of health system and corrective interventions will be done if it is needed.
