Assessing the Implications of the US-Russia Political-Security Strategy on the Geopolitics of West Asia (2000-2020)
The geopolitics of West Asia has undergone profound changes over the past two decades, following the US invasion of Afghanistan and Iraq, the developments of the Arab Spring and the Syrian crisis. The growing crises in West Asia, such as identity crises, weak, undemocratic, and even dependent governments, proxy conflicts, ethnic, religious, and territorial crises, reflect the geopolitical structure of West Asia and its transformations. Under these circumstances, US intervention has brought about profound changes in the geopolitics of West Asia. On the other hand, the entry of international actors such as Russia into the West Asian scene has further complicated the situation, and with Putin's rise to power in Russian domestic politics and the growing role of Russia in world politics, West Asian geopolitics has been strongly influenced by Russia-US strategy. Accordingly, in accordance with the theoretical framework of structuralist realism, this study analyzes the geopolitical situation in West Asia to some extent influenced by the structure of the international system and the geopolitical structure of West Asia. In this context, this article seeks to answer the question of how the US-Russian political-security strategy has affected the geopolitics of West Asia. The findings of the descriptive-analytical study show that the US-Russian political-security strategy in West Asia in the last two decades has intensified geopolitical rivalries, shifted the balance of power, strengthened the role of transnational actors in the region and redistributed power structure.
