Abstract:

Self sacrifice is one of workplace’s prosocial behaviors. This phenomenon is conceptually distinct from other similar constructs like organizational citizenship behaviors or helping behaviors and is an under examined phenomenon in organizations and more research is needed to shed light on different aspects of this phenomenon in organizations. We used phenomenology as the research method and in order to gather the needed data we conducted interviews with 12 Jihadi managers who had experienced the war as voluntary forces. The results show that social expression of the self, intrinsic happiness and satisfaction and developing individual’s positive self concept, feelings of conscientiousness, awareness, being purposeful and following an ideal, and resilient are the most important experiences asserted by participants. The data also reveals emotional climate, slacker colleagues, organizational mission and job philosophy are the most important are amongst the most important contextual and situational factors impacting self-sacrifice in organizations.
