A Study on the Sassanid-Islamic City of Sīrvān Based on The Historical Texts and Archaeological Evidence

Abstract:
Sīrvān /Shīrvān is an important city in the Jibāl region, which according to historical texts on geography, dates back to the Sassanid period. In the first centuries of Islamic civilization, the city was very prosperous as the center of Māsabazān province, but its prosperity declined after the middle of the tenth century Ad. Despite the importance of the city of Sīrvān, no comprehensive research on its location, growth, and declination. This research aims to study the historical sources and archaeological evidence to study the history of this city. The research approach is historical, and the findings have been collected through textual and field studies. The results show that the location Sassanid-Islamic city of Sīrvān is the same as the archaeological field in the vicinity of the village of Sarābkalāan near the city of Sīrvān in Ilām province. The main reasons for Sīrvān's declination are the natural disasters (such as earthquakes), the political and commercial chute after the fall of the Hasanwayhids in the tenth century AD.
