The Mediating Role of Self-Esteem in the Relationship between Parent-Child Relationship and Health-oriented Academic Lifestyle
The study of behaviors that can lead to a healthy academic lifestyle for learners has always been of interest to researchers. The aim of this study was to investigate the mediating role of self-esteem in between parent-child relationship and health-oriented academic lifestyle.
The present study was descriptive-correlational and structural equation modeling. The statistical population of the present study included a high school student in Tehran in 2021-2022 from which 744 people were selected by convenience sampling. Data collection tools included health-oriented academic lifestyle behaviors questionnaire, self-esteem questionnaire and, parent-child relationship questionnaire.
Mean and standard deviation of promotional (83.72±11.43) and inhibitory (72.02±13.62) style of academic life, freedom-oriented (62.13±10.34) and security-oriented (65.12±13.93) parent-child relationship, self-esteem (33.44±4.28) .The results showed that the correlation coefficient between promotional (0.12) and inhibitory (0.27) style of academic life with the pattern of the freedom-oriented parent-child relationship and the correlation between promotional and inhibitory style of academic life with security-oriented parent-child relationship (0.20) is significant at the 0.01 level. Also, the correlation between promotional academic lifestyle (0.11) and inhibitory (0.21) with self-esteem was significant at the level of 0.01. Also, self-esteem had a mediating role in the relationship between parent-child relationship and health-oriented academic lifestyle (P <0.05).
Accordingly, health-oriented lifestyle behaviors in students are related to self-esteem and parent-child relationship, and self-esteem has a mediating role in this relationship.
