Predicting dimensions of perfectionism (self-oriented, other-oriented and socially-prescribed) based on components of emotional intelligence in students

Emotional intelligence and perfectionism are the main and influential aspects in life of personal and academic of students. This study aimed to predict dimensions of perfectionism (self-oriented, other-oriented, socially-prescribed) based on components of emotional intelligence in students. The present study was an applied, quantitative, descriptive correlational study. The statistical population was all students of Islamic Azad University, Kermanshah Branch in the academic year 2020-2021, which among them, 117 students were selected by stratified-relative sampling method. The research instruments were Bradbury and Graves (2004) Emotional Intelligence Scale and Tehran Multidimensional Perfectionism (2007). Obtained data were analyzed using Pearson correlation coefficient and multiple regression analysis. The results demonstrated that the total score of emotional intelligence had a direct and significant relationship with self-oriented perfectionism (P<0.01) and other-oriented perfectionism (P<0.05) but had not a significant relationship with socially-prescribed perfectionism (P>0.05). The results of multiple regression analysis showed that among the components of emotional intelligence, the relationship management component is able to predict self-oriented perfectionism and also the self-management component is able to predict other-oriented perfectionism and socially-prescribed perfectionism. It seems that by implementing appropriate interventions, we can take steps to correct perfectionist attitudes and promote emotional intelligence of students and help improve their quality of life and mental health.
