Investigating social and demographic factors affecting emotional divorce among married men and women living in Tehran

Emotional divorce is one of the traumas that many families face. The breakdown of marital ties is one of the most prominent examples of developments related to today's family. Therefore, the need to study the factors affecting emotional divorce is felt more and more. In this study, emotional divorce is measured in three economic, social-cultural and emotional-sexual dimensions. Moreover, based on theories of Giddens's, exchange, second demographic transition, modernization, conflict, economic deprivation and homogamy, the influence of individualism, modernity, sexual satisfaction, family type (from traditional to modern), power structure in the family, inequality feeling, religious beliefs, educational and religious homogamies, socio-economic status, age, sex, educational level and marriage age on changes in the rate of emotional divorce were assessed using multivariate regression. In a cross-sectional study, 384 married men and women in Tehran were selected using the Cochran's formula and their information were gathered by a researcher made questionnaire in 1400 . The reliability of the research questionnaire was confirmed by Cronbach's alpha. Findings showed that women have emotional divorce more than men and the variables of sexual dissatisfaction, heterogeneities of religious beliefs and education, individualism, modernity, traditionality of the family and lower marriage age lead to a greater extent emotional divorce among married men and women.
