A secondary analysis of two national surveys of the values and views of Iranians (A study of the relationship between gender and religious attitudes and family patterns)

This paper is a study of the relationship between gender and religious attitudes indices and the Iranian’s family patterns and norms on the basis of the secondary analysis of the data of two national surveys of the values and attitudes of Iranians (2000 and 2003). The amount of samples in the first survey was 16824 people and in the second survey 4581 people. At the beginning of the research, religious and gender attitudes indices were obtained through factor analysis from among the related questions and the relationship between these two indices and the variables of family and marriage was studied. An overview of the major results of the research shows that there is a relationship between religious and gender attitudes in the two national surveys and with the rise of the level of religiosity the gender attitude towards women moderates too. In addition, it was shown that there is a positive relationship between strong religious attitude and family behaviors such consulting, unburdening, avoiding violence, disagreements, punishment of children, interference in children’s personal affairs, and leaning towards children’s independent life.
