A survey of relationship between coping styles and mental health in patients undergoing hemodialytic treatment

Abstract:
Dialysis, as a solution in patients of chronic renal failure, is a stressor process and is followed by numerous psychological and social problems that can complicate patients’ mental health. Due to high prevalence of mental disorders in the society, this study was executed to determine relationship between coping styles and mental health of hemodialysis patients. Methods and Materials: This studyis a corelational type and was performed among 35 patients hospitalized in Booali hospital of Ardabil during 2005-2006. In this study General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-28) was used to assess mental health status of patients. Also, Coping Styles Questionnaire of Falkman and Lazarus (65 items) was used to assess copying styles. For data analysis Pearson’s correlation coefficient and enter-method multivariate regression analysis were used.
Results
Findings indicated that there is a positive significant correlation between mental health and coping styles of confronting (r=0.12), self-controlling(r=0.16), social support(r=0.17), problem solving (r=0.24) and reevaluation (r=0.26). Also there is a negative significant correlation between mental health and coping styles of withdrawal (r=-0.34) and avoidance (r=-.09). The following coping styles can predict mental health: withdrawal (t=-6.06), avoidance (t=-7.53) and reevaluation (t=3.11) styles.
Conclusion
Since individuals with suitable mental health dominantly use problem-oriented methods for mental health provision through effective coping styles, it is mandatory to train hemodialysis patients collaboratively.
