Semantic Contribution of Some Affixes in Kurdish language (Sorani Dialect)

Abstract:
The present paper explores the semantic contribution of some affixes and verb stems (past and present) in sorani, a majo dialect of Kurdish. In the lexical semantic representation framework, affixes, like other lexical items, have semantic features, subcategories, arguments and semantic skeletons. In this framework, lexical items, including affixes, are defined by the following semantic features: ‌[material],[dynamic], [Location], [IEPS], [B] and [CI] and semantic skeletons are represented for them. Then the skeletons are put together and the argument of the affix is co-indexed with one of the arguments of the base to make a semantic unit that refers to one element. Here are the conclusions gained based on the theory: the contribution of present stems of simple verbs to creating new lexemes is much more than the contribution of past stems; some affixes have the same semantic skeletons and as a result they make the same semantic contribution and their different representation in new lexemes is related to other factors; lastly, contrary to our expectation, there exist some affixes in Sorani that have two semantic skeletons.
