Investigating the Competitiveness of Iran's Long Grain Rice in Gilan Province

Due to population growth and increasing per capita consumption of rice, domestic production could not satisfy demand, and as a result, rice import has increased dramatically. This study aims to determine the competiveness of high yield long grain rice produced in Gilan province by using PCR, UCd and UCx indices. The study time period started from cropping year 2002-2003 and ended in 2005-2006. The results revealed that high yield long grain rice could compete with other varieties on condition that that price distortion was removed. UCd of less than one (0.52) showed domestic cost competitiveness advantage of the variety in domestic market but UCx more than one indicated export competitiveness disadvantages of the variety
