The role of counseling in prevention of social deviance among high school

Education is a social institution which can be effective in growth, improvement and identity of the individuals and formation of their personalities, therefore investment and planning in education shall be most important responsibility of the officials of society. Also, consultants are necessary for students in solving their problems and performing well and intelligently. The main goal of this study is to investigate the role of counseling in prevention of social deviance of high school students. The theory of Merton was used in this study. He believed that, in every society, there are two basic structures, one is institutionalized goals and the other is institutionalized means. He assumed that the social deviance is resulted from inequality between goals and accepted means in the society which is confirmed to the situation of the Iran society and the related social deviance. This is a survey –documentary research and the data is collected through constructed questionnaire distributed among 400 students who were selected thru sampling in high schools located in District 2 of Tehran. The findings show that the students are aware from their abilities, they are hopeful toward future and are able to plan for future, and on the other hand, they have high and positive self-concept. The high school students (Girls) without social deviance have good educational status. The skill of consultants is effective in absorption of students and sometimes, the students who fear for transferring their problems to their parents so refuse to refer to the consultants. Intimate relation of students’ family is very important for relationship between students and consultants. Also, the unsuitable behavioral and moral patterns are very effective in social deviance and the increasing of religious beliefs leads to reduction of social deviance.
