Status Claims and Material and Cultural Lifestyle

Message:
Abstract:
In the social inequality literature, many hypotheses have emphasized on proposing status claims. The barriers created, which were made according to appropriate social position, are connected with status claims in different ways. This subject has more evidence with regard particularly to socially disadvantaged groups such as age, gender, religious, minority groups and those that are multiple in status. Status claims determine interactions such as mode of expression, behavior and symbols, which signal membership in a certain group to others. This claim provides not only the dignity but also the lifestyle and opportunities for individuals. People’s need for a status claim is increased when their respect, dignity and position are under threat. This paper examines the relationship between the structural position and situation of multiple status on lifestyle with material or cultural value orientation, as an antitype of status claims, in order to determine whether status threat or deprivation takes on lifestyles with specific trends or not? The results show that women, singles, non-workers, and those with a higher social status tend to have lifestyles with cultural value orientation while educated people and those with multiple statuses tend towards material value orientations. In this case, the most powerful variables in multiple relations are, gender, education, social status and status dichotomy.
