A survey of public librarians familiarity with Standards of professional ethics

Assessing the knowledge of librarians in public libraries inTehran regarding ethical standards of professional ethics for library and librarians، this study، has provided solutions to establish the ethical charter. Related documents were reviewed as well as a survey were carried out to compare the existing criteria in the library literature. To obtain information about the principles a multiple choice questionnionnaire was sent to the librarians in public libraries of Tehran city via email. The results of the study showed that 47 percent of libraries in public libraries in Tehran are not familiar with standards of professional ethics; 67 percent of them are willing to have a charter of professional ethics; 70 percent feel the necessity to get familiar with professional ethics; and 70 percent of them think that studying special texts of librarianship during their job is necessary. Originality/Value: Ethical principles should be based on the moral standards، religious and human developments like in many other professions. When the library has an ethical charter، librarians can introduce their own professional principles to the society more than ever; ethical principles of each profession indicates the value which is important to the society، customers and clients.
