religious worldview

Abrahamic faiths, which are among the divine revelations, consider science to be the knowledge of the universe and humans. The proper understanding of science is the study of the natural world through the lens of religious metaphysics which takes into account all relevant factors from a religious viewpoint. This study aims to survey the effect of religious worldview on the metaphysical principles that govern science, and deals with the following questions:1) What effect do religious metaphysical foundations have on the interpretation of scientific theories? 2) How scientific work, in the light of the divine worldview, ensures the material and spiritual needs of mankind? 3) Is experimental science influenced by religious and philosophical values and insights? 4) Are various human and natural sciences far from value judgments? In this paper, we use the fact that all scientific theories are based on some metaphysical assumptions that are not taken from these sciences but are rooted in philosophies or religions and provide a worldview for the scientist. Furthermore, these worldviews affect scientists’ motivations and their choices of theories. We argue that the worldview of monotheistic religions puts the totality of scientific issues in the context of religious metaphysics.

Worldview is often concerned with metaphysical problems, and the empirical science with natural problems. But after discovering the relationship between them, we can see whether the new scientific discoveries can lead to new worldviews and whether the new worldviews can change the empirical sciences. This article aims at examining Abdulkarim Soroush’s views on this issue. According to Soroush, the different sciences have different relationships with each other. By separating the contexts of “Assertion” and “Latency” and the stages of “Discovery” and “Judgment”, he shows that the relationship between sciences is only in the context of “Assertion” and the stage of “Discovery” and in these two the empirical science and worldview can influence on each other.

Some different viewpoints and perceptions regarding religious science have been presented. Some theorists, relying on a special view about science and religion, have basically rejected the religious science, and some, on the contrary, in addition to accepting the principle of religious sciences possibility and its objective materialization, believe in its necessity, one ofwhom is Professor Mehdi Golshani. In his viewpoint, the worldview and metaphysical foundations dominating on the science and scientist are the factors rendering science religious. On the basis of this viewpoint, the religiosity of science is a matter of sciences foundations and goals. Religious science is a knowledge based on theist worldview. The religiosity of sciences goal is considered in theoretical and practical dimensions. In the theoretical dimension, the goal is to discover Gods signs and get familiar with the creation design and perceive Gods power and greatness. In the practical dimension, the goal is to dominate the natural world in order to meet the humans legitimate needs and use the capacities God has provided humans with. The present article, first, presents religious sciences foundations and nature in the viewpoint of Dr. Golshani, and then, examines and criticizes his theory. Keywords: Science, Religion, Religious Science, Foundations, Religious Worldview
