The Analysis of Jahangirnameh Based on Prop's Theory of Formalism

Vladimir Prop، a Russian folklorist، embarked on a formalistic study of Russain fairy tales. Unlike other classifications which classify stories on the basis of content and theme، his classification is based on the form and structure of stories. In his opinion، the first step is to know and find the constant elements and the changing elements of a story. He concluded that stories have various characters، but what they do is limited. Jahangirnameh is an epic work in Persian literature that narrates the story of Jahangir، Rostam\''s son. The present article tries to study this work on the basis of Prop\''s theory of formalism and to explicate thirty-one functions of the theory in this work. Many of these functions can apply to this work، but some functions and the end of this book of poems are not compatible with fairy tales.
