The Impact of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) on the Environmental Quality in Iran
Message:
Abstract:
The impact of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) on environment is a complex and multifaceted issue. ICT can play both positive and negative roles in environmental sustainability. Indeed applying ICT equipments reduce the need for to natural and environment materials and also reduce environmental damages. However, ICT equipments like computers are an assembly of materials which many of them are highly toxic; therefore, the ICT revolution may have negative impacts on the environment as well. This paper attempts to investigate the effect of ICT indices on the environmental quality in Iran over the period of 1976 to 2009 using ARDL approach to cointegration. The results indicate that the fixed and mobile telephone lines besides the ICT expenditure of government have positive impacts on the environmental quality; whereas, an increase in the number of internet users reduces the environmental quality in Iran.
