Relationship between Mental Health and Academic Performance of University Students of 11th-Region Branches of Islamic Azad University in 1387-88
Abstract:
This study investigated the relation between mental health and academic performance of University Students of 11th-region branches of Islamic Azad University in 1387-88. 1028 university students (555 boys, 473 girls) 11th-Region Branches of Islamic Azad University were randomly chosen. The general Health questionnaire (GHQ-28) was used to collect data and measure the required variables. In addition, the average academic grades of examinees were also collected. The results showed that %59 of examinees had proper mental health, but %44 of them vulnerable to mental disorders. There was a significant difference between male and female students in their health, no significant relation between mental health and academic performance. Female student's mental health was less. There existed an inverse relation between age and depression, and significant one between the mental health of students and their academic year of study, which was considered helpful to their mental health. There was an inverse relation between the size of the family and the grade for the student's physical health. And also there was a significant relation between the parent's employment and education with the student's mental health.
