In Vitro antibacterial activity of methanolic extracts of three species of Eucalyptus against some pathogenic bacteria (Escherichia coli, Streptococcus pyogenes and Staphylococcus aureus)
Background And ObjectivePresently in the developing countries, synthetic drugs are not only expensive and inadequate for the treatment of disease but are also often with adulteration and side effects. The main objective of this study is to examine the antimicrobial activity of the methanolic extracts of Eucalyptus camaldulensis, E. globules and E. microtheca against some pathogenic bacteria.
Materials And MethodsLeaves of the three species of Eucalyptus were collected from some regions of Jiroft. The plants were duly authenticated and air dried in suitable conditions. Maceration method was used to obtain the plant extracts and antibacterial effects of different concentrations of extracts were studied against E. coli, S. aureus and S. pyogenes by pour plate and disc diffusion methods. The minimum inhibitory concentration of the extracts was determined using the agar dilution method.
ResultsIn pour plate method, extracts of plants exhibited no antimicrobial effects on E. coli. Extracts of E. camaldulensis and E. globulus inhibited the growth of S. aureus and S. pyogenes, while extract of E. microtheca inhibited the growth of S. aureus. The MIC of E. camaldulensis extract for S. aureus and S. pyogenes was less than 7.8 μg/ml. The MIC of E. globules extract for S. aureus was 15.6 μg/ml whereas it was 31.25 μg/ml for S. pyogenes. The MIC was 15.6 μg/ml for S. aureus and S. pyogenes when the extract of E. microtheca was tested.
ConclusionThe results obtained suggest that methanolic extracts of Eucalyptus have been found to be effective against some pathogenic bacteria.
