The effectiveness of police place-oriented activities in crime prevention

Numerous studies show that crimes are not monotonously distributed in the urban atmosphere and their meaningful gathering in small places or hot spots allocate half of crime incidents to itself (Braga, 4:2007). The place where a crime occurs can be a small place like street's corners, buildings, bus stations and etc. So, this article by conducting library studies and examining the global experiences pursues the philosophy of using the crime prevention strategy, namely the police place-oriented activities. With brief examination of some crime place theories, the article seeks the role of place in crime prevention. Then in the continue, the police concentration on hot spots or in other words the place-oriented approach to crime prevention as well as the relevant global experiences are examined in order to challenge the philosophy of using this strategy from all aspects. The findings show that place-oriented strategy in spite of few crimes’ displacement is regarded as the most important police innovation in recent decades. But, for using this strategy there is a need for sharing information between different organizations and geocoding the hot spots in order to record the crime place data with high quality. So, comprehensive crime laws are necessary for organizations dealing with police to cooperate with one another and to be obliged to help the police in preparing information for the reduction of crime and disorder. Finally, researchers believe that by concentrating their strategies in such places, the police officers will be successful in crime reduction.
