Comparison of Honey and Chamomile Mouthwash in Intensity Stomatitis among Patients with Head and Neck Radiotherapy

The most common complication of radiotherapy for head and neck cancer is stomatitis which can be reduced by mouthwash. The study has been done "to Compare between honey and chamomile mouthwashs in reducing the severity of stomatitis induced by radiotherapy head and neck". The present study is a clinical trial and single blind research. The sample of 105 patients with head and neck radiation therapy referred to Shafa hospital in Kerman during 2011were selected. The subjects were divided into 3 groups: first Chamomile group (N=40) gurgled with 3cc Matrices mouthwash, the second group gurgled a solution containing 20cc diluted honey and the third group routine oral mouth wash (water). Subjects were assessed with WHO grading scale. Results entailing categorical and continuous variables were analyzed by analysis of fisher exact test, X2, Mann-Whitney U test as appropriate. Stomatitis on the first, seventh and fourteenth days in the group receiving water showed statistically a significant difference (P = 0/001). Also stomatitis on seventh and fourteenth days of the three groups that received Matrica mouth, honey and water showed a significant difference (P = 0/001). Stomatitis on the first day of the three groups showed no significant difference (P = 0/054), but on the seventh and fourteenth days intensity stomatitis of the three groups differed significantly (P <0/001). The study indicats that Matrica & honey mouth washing is able to reduce and treat the ulcer stomatitis in radiotherapy wards.
