Experiences of High School Female Student's Parents on the Possible Internet-Related Cultural Harms: A Case Study of Semirom City

The present article aims to examine the lived experiences of students’ parents with regard to the Internet cultural harms inflicted on their siblings. The research employs a qualitative and phenomenological approach to reach its objectives. The participants in the study were mothers and fathers of high school female students from Somirom city. The data were collected through a semi-structured interview and analyzed through the 7-phased Colaizzi approach. The findings indicate that the parents’ understanding of the possible Internet cultural harms could be divided into three categories: The value-related Internet possible harms which include religious and ethical values; the norm-related Internet possible harms which include dress code, communications, family economy and traditions; and finally national identity-related Internet possible harms.In sum, Somirom parents viewed the Internet content as conflicting with their society culture. They thought using unethical content of the Internet has a negative effect on their national identity, personal identity and religious and ethical values of their siblings.
