Effective capabilities and skills needed for college teaching

The purpose of current study is to identify and explain the importance and application of skills and abilities needed for effective teaching at the universities. This research is a survey type and its statistical population included two groups of faculty members and bachelor degree students in Ferdowsi University of Mashhad. By using stratified random sampling method 523 students and 171 faculty members were randomly selected. Weshan''s questionnaire (1999) was used to collect data. The questionnaire validity was assessed through content-related validity and split-halves validity. The reliability of the questionnaire was evaluated using internal consistency. Data were analyzed using one way ANOVA for first، second، third and forth hypothesis، Student''s t-test for fifth and sixth hypothesis and Student''s t-test for seventh، eighth and ninth hypothesis. Results showed that there was a significant difference between the components of effective teaching from professors and students’ perspective. In addition a significant difference was observed in level of exercising application of teaching component in two groups of professors and students perspectives. The results also indicated that there was a significant difference between professors and students'' opinions about the difference between present situation (use of teaching skills) and desired situation (the importance of skills). In general، research findings have clearly shown a need for transition from current state to some desired situation.
