Providing Desirability Principles and Criteria for Upgrading Space Qualities of the River Side in Dezful

The urban fabric, ancient hydraulic constructions through the River Dez and the river itself create a potential in the city of Dezful that would be turned into a unique public space, playing a significant role to improve the urban identity of the city. This study suggests a set of concepts and design techniques to achieve such a public space. The paper is the result of a research on the notion of space and place in urban design process. The research was hosted at Islamic Azad University of Dezful in 2010. The study targeted the South bank of Dezful River – between Ancient Bridge and the Roodband tomb, one of the sites, where ancient hydraulic constructions are located. The research was a comparative case study; and qualitative analyses were employed to achieve the results. The research proposed suggestions to design the riverside, aiming at upgrading the quality of the urban landscape at the South bank of Dez River in Dezful. The study can be considered a model for architects and urban designers to deal with similar cases.
