Lacanian Reading of Psychosis in The Blind Owl
Message:
Abstract:
The prominent French psychoanalyst, Jacques Marie Émile Lacan and his theoriesdescribing the unconscious, has created a huge transformation in Literary Criticism. He uses Freud’s concept of the unconscious and Saussure’s linguistics to explain thenew framework of the concept of the unconscious. This paper is an attempt to applythe theories of Lacan in the narrator of The Blind Owl written by a contemporarywriter Sadeq Hedayat as a subject of psychosis. Psychosis is a mental illness whichis characterized by the patients’ disability to encounter the realities of theirsurrounding lives. The isolation and separation from society, is the beginning ofillusions in which case, the patient thinks himself worthy of the ideal world. So, weexpress at the beginning the application of this theory in the realm of “imaginary,”the realm of the “symbolic” and other terms, then we review The Blind Owl’snarrator according to the implications of Lacan’s theories.
