Single and Multiple Meaning in Reading Contemporary Arabic Poetry

If the poem embodies poetic issues and motivations and its form and content are determined by its writer before its creation, the text bears one single meaning. Such texts are simple, clear, and explainable in terms of meaning or their interpretation leads to one meaning. However, in texts where the scope of freedom is wider for the writer in creating meaning and form and in fact the text is created after and in parallel with the reader’s power of imagination, the texts references turn into free references. This way, the reader has an interactive relation with the text and is furthermore involved with its literariness. Such complex texts are multiple layered and are enclosed in terms of meaning. These texts lead to more than one meaning; in fact they go beyond the boundary of past explanations and interpretations and are interpretable texts. The present researcher discusses the comprehension and perception of modern Arabic poems. The researcher hypothesizes that thought and worldview may affect the text. The researcher concludes that the modern Arabic poems are more transparent and lead a single meaning if they are more realistic. On the contrary, modern Arabic poems are more complicated and lead to multiple meanings if they deviate from realism and turn to metaphysics.
