A Sociological Analysis of Arabic Poet's Use of Titiles Based on Goffman's Theory of Stigma

Message:
Abstract:
Irving Goffman's stigma theory suggests that social stigma can result from the perception of physical, racial and personal traits. This disapproval is attached to the person as a stigma and effects the person's character and how one lives in the society. This study intends to rely on this theory to analyze the development of the titles of the Arabic poets and its influence on their social behavior. The main findings of this study has been achieved through a descriptive- analytical method; it shows that one of the formation of the titles of the Arabic poets is mainly by physical, personal, and racial traits, that can well be studied using Goffman's theory. In this research, reaction of poets such as Antarah, Shanfari, Tabbeta Sharan, and Hota towards their physical and racial stigma are quite different and can be studied through their poems and sayings.
