Study of Family Functioning in Addicts and Normal People

The aim of this study is to compare dimensions of family functioning in addicts and normal people. To achieve the goal, 50 addicts and 50 normal people were selected by convenience sampling in Tabriz city. Data were collected with use of demographic characteristics and family functioning questionnaires. Data were analyzed using SPSS 20 software with multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA). The results showed that among the components of family functioning, overall performance, problem solving, communication, roles, affective involvement and behavior control were significantly different between addicts and normal people. But no significant difference was found between the groups in the term of emotional solidarity. The results indicated family dysfunctioning in addicted family. Therefore, according to this study, fundamental substance abuse prevention interventions are highly suggested.
