Factors Affecting the Willingness of Organ Donation from Brain Dead Patients in Ahvaz

Organ donation from brain dead patients is a crucial issue in world. People’s attitude toward organ donation after brain death varies in different countries and regions. The purpose of this study was to investigate the factors affecting the willingness of organ donation from brain dead patients in Ahvaz. Subjects and This cross-sectional study was performed on 1800 peoples between 18 and 65 years of age in Ahvaz city. A self-administrated questionnaire included demographic information and attitudes toward organ donation after brain death was employed to collect data. Validity and reliability of the instrument was evaluated in a pilot study. Descriptive statistics and Chi square test were used for analyzing the data. Of 1800 participants, 1568 (87.1%) favored with organ donation after brain death. The most important reasons provided by those who agreed with donation was “religious issues and heavenly reward” whereas the most common cause of disagreement was “love your body and the possibility of reversible brain death.” (98.3% and 79.9% respectively). There was significant differences between willingness for organ donation after brain death by age, educational level and occupation (P<0.05). The findings indicate that religious issues and humanitarian reasons? are the important role on organ donation after brain death in the community.
