The Role of Family Attitudes on Violating Traffic Regulations

Message:
Abstract:
Recently, the rapid increase in motorization and urbanization has been experienced in most urban built-up settings, especially inpopulous cities. This could be viewed as an issue since it may cause traffic congestion and conflicts in vehicular movements, which is a potential source of traffic violations. Disregarding traffic rules are potentially directed to the lack of surveillance systems, travel patterns, and social control on road users’ behaviors and attitudes, poor cultural background, social norms and perceived conduct control. The aforementioned factors indicate that the issue of ignoring traffic regulations in urban areas could make serious consequences. This study aimed at investigating the role of family characteristics on obeying traffic rules. It was found that education, especially during early childhood period, plays an important role in respecting traffic regulations in urban areas. The findings of this study highlight the need for increasing efforts towards intensifying education and training in both family and society levels in order to reduce traffic violations committed by road users in dense urban areas. Such an important task would be achieved by public awareness and legislation.
